Kara’s passion for educating people on speech language and learning skills is topped only by her caring nature and commitment to helping those with communication difficulties. She is known for developing strong working relationships with her clients and families and is skilled at inspiring, building confidence and skill sets to enable them be the best communicators they can be. With a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology and Bachelor’s in Kinesiology, Kara has been helping children, teens and adults improve their communication skills and confidence for more than a decade. In her spare time, Kara enjoys being at the lake, water skiing, visiting the mountains, swimming, reading, campfires and spending time with her family.

Brina Down has her Masters in Social Work from Dalhousie University and focused her studies on PTSD and trauma recovery.  She has been working in healthcare for over 10 years, working in acute care facilities, in out patient clinics and community settings.  Brina currently works for Organizational Effectiveness and Leadership within the Sask. Health Authority and does private counselling.  Brina is passionate about the mental health of healthcare workers and the impact healthcare has on our mental wellbeing.       

Jennifer King, BSW

Jennifer King has her Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Regina and is currently enrolled in the Master's program of Health Sciences at the University of Saskatchewan with a focus on pain management in social work. She has worked in education, mental health, and chronic disease management over the past 17 years. Currently, she works in the Sask. Health Authority and provides counselling in private practice.  Jennifer is focused on developing the role of social work in pain management and providing non-pharmacological pain strategies for clients.

Acute Care for COVID-19 Patients

Carolyne Mayo received her M. Sc. in speech-language pathology at the University of Alberta in 2018. Since then, she has worked in the adult acute care setting at both Royal University Hospital and St. Paul’s Hospital with a specialization in the management of aphasia and dysphagia.

Jennifer Cameron-Turley, M.Sc., S-LP(C), Reg. SK

Senior Speech-Language Pathologist, Saskatchewan Health Authority

Jennifer Cameron-Turley received her M.Sc. in speech-language pathology at the University of British Columbia in 2002. Since that time, she has worked in a variety of settings, largely focused in the adult acute-care setting with a specialization in dysphagia management and head and neck oncology. Beginning her career on the west coast, she moved to Saskatchewan in 2007 and has been working as a senior speech-language pathologist at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon since 2012.

Jennifer is also currently in the 2nd Vice Chair position on the Board of Directors of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Canada.

Karla Horvey, BScPT 

Karla received her BScPT from the University of Saskatchewan in 2008 and PhD in Health Science in 2018. She has worked as an acute care physio for the entirety of her career and currently works at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon. Karla is also a Certified Respiratory Educator and is on the Canadian Respiratory Health Professionals Leadership Council.

The relationship of healthcare provider wellness, workplace environment and culture to patient wellbeing, care and safety is a crucial component of healthcare systems. This session will discuss normal emotional experiences of healthcare workers during a pandemic, identify available resources if we need to reach out for help, and provide practical strategies to enhance our ability to cope during this time.

 Dr. Anita Chakravarti M.D. (USask ‘82) and F.R.C.P.(UofA Anesthesiology ‘87) has been a member of the Department of Anesthesiology, and a professor at the College of Medicine, USask for over 30 years during which time she has provided clinical services, teaching and administration in Anesthesiology, Intensive Care, Pain and Integrative Medicine. She has recently focused on Health Care Provider Wellness initiatives, including mindful and compassion practice, has published and presented to local, national and international audiences.  Currently Dr. Chakravarti is Wellness Lead at Continuing Medical Education, College of Medicine, collaborates with USask Be Well Programming and the Saskatchewan Health Authority PsychoSocial Supports for HealthCare Workers during Pandemic Provincial Committee  Dr. Chakravarti is certified with Mindful Practice ® New York and CEO of [M]Power Mindful Professional Practice

 

SLP in Telehealth Part 2: Keep Kids Engaged & Get Adult Buy-In

Randa Tomczak, M.S. SLP(C), Reg.SK, *

Randa Tomczak is a Speech Language Pathologist running a private practice in Saskatoon. After working in the United States, New Zealand, and Canada, Randa now has a combined 20 years of clinical and academic experience in communication disorders. She is a licensed and nationally certified speech-language pathologist SLP(C) with more than 15 years of clinical experience in the rehabilitation for neurogenic cognitive and communication disorders caused by stroke, brain injury and degenerative disease. She also has much experience in the provision of speech language therapy for children from newborn to teens in the areas of developmental apraxia of speech, speech delay, and language learning delay as well as in adult accent modification services. Her portfolio has entailed providing evidence-based interventions and clinical education for children and adults to master’s level speech-language pathology trainees, promoting human rights for accessibility and inclusion for individuals with communication disabilities and extensive collaborative work with Indigenous communities. She has a passion for advancing interprofessional collaborations in health care and education and has subsequently provided many seminars and workshops and co-facilitated such course work at the University of Alberta during her prior posting as a Clinical Assistant Professor. Randa is a veteran clinician, educator and passionate advocate for individuals with communication disabilities. In Randa’s free time she enjoys making art, learning, being outside, and spending time with her family.

Jim Millard  graduated from Western University with a BSc (PT) in 1991. He achieved fellowship status with the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapy in 2000. He received an MClSc (MT) from Western University in 2010 and a transitional Post Professional Doctorate in MSK Management from Evidence in Motion in 2013. Jim is an experienced provider of continuing professional development, having taught the Mulligan Concept manual therapy system courses in Canada since 2007. Jim has been a lecturer in the School of Physical Therapy at Western University both in the MPT and MClSc programs. He is also the past Vice Chair of the Leadership Division of the CPA. Jim is an owner/partner at Body Mechanics Physiotherapy in London Ontario where he resides with his wife Kelly and three children.
