This course provides foundational education and practical training in the use of therapeutic ultrasound and laser for occupational therapy practice. It is specifically designed for occupational therapists who have not previously been taught how to use these modalities and are seeking a structured, evidence-informed introduction. 

No prior ultrasound or laser experience is required.

This course is intended for: 

  • Occupational therapists with no formal training in therapeutic ultrasound or laser 
  • OTs seeking to add ultrasound and laser to their clinical skill set 
  • Practitioners who require foundational education and competency assessment in physical agent modalities 

This course assumes learners are new to ultrasound and laser and builds knowledge and skills step by step. 

This course will guide you from foundational concepts through to safe clinical application. By the end of the course, you will be able to: 

  • Explain how ultrasound and laser work, including relevant physics and tissue effects 
  • Understand when and why to use each modality in OT practice 
  • Identify indications, contraindications, and precautions for safe use 
  • Select appropriate treatment parameters based on tissue healing and clinical goals 
  • Demonstrate safe setup and application techniques for ultrasound and laser 
  • Integrate modalities into occupation-based, client-centered intervention planning 
  • Document modality use according to professional and ethical standards 

Assessment is designed to support learners who are new to these modalities while ensuring safe, competent practice. 

You will complete: 

  • Online quizzes to reinforce foundational knowledge 
  • Case-based activities focused on clinical decision-making 
  • live OSCE-style exam via Zoom, where you will demonstrate:  
  • Equipment setup and safety 
  • Parameter selection 
  • Application technique 
  • Clinical reasoning and client education 

Course Format

This is a fully online course with a combination of self-paced learning and live virtual assessment. 

  • This is a self-paced course, and estimated to take learners 12 hours to completed 
  • All course requirements must be completed within 16 weeks of registration 
  • Learners progress from foundational theory to applied skills at a supported pace 

You will begin with foundational instruction, including: 

  • Pre-recorded lectures designed for learners new to ultrasound and laser 
  • Guided explanations of terminology, concepts, and equipment 
  • Step-by-step video demonstrations of modality application 
  • Quizzes and case-based learning activities to build confidence and clinical reasoning 

You can complete these modules on your own schedule. It is estimated to take learners 12 hours to complete.  

To confirm safe and competent entry-level use, the course includes: 

  • A live OSCE-style clinical examination conducted via Zoom 

Assessment sessions are scheduled at the convenience of the learner and examiner. 

Hands-On Skill Development & Equipment

Although the course is online, it includes practical skill expectations. 

Learners are expected to have access to: 

  • therapeutic ultrasound unit
  • therapeutic laser device 
  • Appropriate safety equipment (e.g., laser safety glasses)
You will receive clear instruction and demonstration before being assessed on hands-on skills.

Learners who do not have access to ultrasound and/or laser equipment must contact CERS after registering to make alternative arrangements for completing the practical requirements.
