Purpose

This document outlines the guidelines necessary to ensure students in the School of Rehabilitation Science (SRS) present themselves in a safe, professional, and respectful manner that aligns with the standards of clinical placement environments Professional appearance supports patient safety, infection control, and fosters confidence and trust in therapeutic relationships. 

Student Responsibilities

Students must: 

Comply with Site Requirements 

  • Follow site-specific dress codes, infection control guidelines, and personal protective equipment requirements
  • Note: Some clinical environments may require tattoos to be covered, gel nails or nail polish to be removed, or have other detailed requirements 
Respect Diversity  
  • Wear attire appropriate to the clinical environment and role 
  • Ensure attire respects diverse patient populations   
Footwear 
  • Use close-toed, non-slip footwear for personal and patient safety     
Identification 
  • Wear name/ID badge at all times for identification and security purposes 
Personal and Professional Impression 
  • Wear clothing that is clean and does not pose safety risks   
  • Avoid perfumes or scented products, as most facilities are scent-free to ensure patient and worker safety   
  • Avoid any jewelry or accessories that may pose safety risks   
Hair and Facial Hair 
  • Long hair should be worn so it does not interfere with patient treatment, pose an infection control risk, or obscure vision  
  • Ensure facial hair will not impede safety, such as the proper fit of personal protective equipment (e.g. respirator masks)   
  • Religious exemptions for facial hair must be formalized through USask Access and Equity Services (AES)
