Purpose

This document outlines the requirements for establishing Clinical Placement Agreements to support clinical education within the School of Rehabilitation Science (SRS) at the University of Saskatchewan (USask). These agreements ensure compliance with accreditation standards and risk management practices.

Background

Students in SRS programs may complete placements in Saskatchewan, across Canada, or internationally. While not all facilities require Clinical Placement Agreements, they are mandatory for the Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) program. These agreements are formal contracts between USask and the organization/corporation, detailing the responsibilities and requirements of both parties.

Agreements may include:

  • Responsibilities of each party
  • Insurance requirements (liability, malpractice, health, travel)
  • Compliance with organizational safety and policy requirements (criminal record checks, certifications, immunizations)
  • Licensing requirements in the relevant jurisdiction
  • Terms for renewal, revision, or termination

SRS values diverse clinical experiences and will make reasonable efforts to negotiate agreements that support provincial, inter-provincial, and international placements.

Student Responsibilities

Students on placement must:

  • Comply with all terms of the agreement as instructed by the Clinical Education Unit
  • Meet all mandatory requirements of the agreement (e.g. certifications, checks)
  • Cover any associated costs specified by the agreement

Students will be informed of all Saskatchewan requirements during the first clinical practice course, and again during the mandatory Clinical Practice orientation sessions held prior to each placement block.

Students will be informed of any out-of-province or out-of-country requirements as soon as possible.

  • USask, under the Academic Health Sciences Network, has an agreement with the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA)

Clinical Placements Outside Saskatchewan

  • Following confirmation of a placement by the university in the jurisdiction, the organization is contacted to determine if an agreement is required
  • If the organization does not have its own template:
    • The USask template, approved by USask Legal Office, is used and provided to the organization for approval
  • If the facility has its own template:
    • The agreement is reviewed by the Academic Lead, Clinical Education and Community Affairs (ALCECA), and the USask Legal Office for approval
