Purpose

This document outlines the procedure necessary to ensure students in the School of Rehabilitation Science (SRS) programs comply with the Saskatchewan Academic Health Sciences Network (SAHSN) provincial affiliation agreement for clinical placements and are adequately prepared for clinical practice in diverse facilities and settings.

Student Responsibilities

Students admitted to any SRS program must:

Provide Proof of Certification

  • Submit a scanned copy of valid CPR certification at the Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider level (or equivalent) by the date specified in the admissions package
  • Requirements across clinical sites can vary in terms of certification currency and level, therefore students must be prepared to meet the SRS minimal standard of CPR certification
  • Certification obtained within 12 months prior to program entry is acceptable if it has not expired and will not expire prior to the end of the first clinical placement
Maintain Certification
  • Keep CPR certification current throughout the program
  • Provide proof of re-certification annually

Course Requirements

Certification must:

  • Be issued by a Canadian accredited institution
  • Include an in-person skills assessment
  • Cover:
    • Pulse checks
    • Rescue breathing
    • Use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
    • Two-person CPR (child and adult)
    • Use of a bag-valve mask (BVM)
  • Note: CPR Level C is not equivalent and will not be accepted.
Submission
  • Proof of certification must be submitted to the SRS as per the directions provided in the admissions package
  • Annual renewal must be submitted as per the directions provided by the SRS Clinical Education Unit
Costs
  • Students are responsible for all costs associated with obtaining and maintaining CPR certification
Clinical Placement
  • Students without valid CPR certification will not be permitted to attend clinical placements until proof of certification is provided

Additional Information

  • Students should contact CPR course providers in advance to confirm equivalency to a Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider course
  • Various institution/organizations (e.g., Canadian Red Cross) offer acceptable courses
  • If certification expires prior to the end of any placement, or prior to the annual renewal requirement, it is recommended that students register prior to expiry to qualify for a refresher course rather than full re-certification
